Extremmepoint.com, Link-up -; Topan tornado masih meninggalkan banyak korban di kawasan selatan Amerika Serikat. Perhitungan termutakhir menunjukkan, pada Rabu (27/4/2011), sedikitnya 128 orang tewas di negara bagian Alabama. 

Kota terparah di situ, Turcaloosa, terhitung sebagai kawasan terparah lantaran tornado. Soalnya, di situ ditemukan setidaknya 15 orang tewas. Negara bagian Mississippi, Georgia, dan Tennessee juga melaporkan adanya korban jiwa, seturut warta AP dan AFP pada Kamis.

Keadaan darurat sudah dideklarasikan di tujuh negara bagian dan dana bantuan dari pemerintah federal sudah dikirim ke Alabama. Seorang ahli meteorologi mengatakan, tornado yang menghancurkan Tuscaloosa itu kemungkinan "yang terburuk dalam sejarah Alabama".

Tuscaloosa, kota berpenduduk 83.000 dan tempat salah satu kampus Universitas Alabama, mulai dihantam badai pada Rabu pagi. Rumah sakit di kota itu mengatakan, bangsal gawat daruratnya merawat 400 orang.

Laporan awal Biro Pelayanan Cuaca Nasional AS mengatakan bahwa sudah terjadi 300 tornado sejak gelombang badai dimulai pada Jumat lalu, termasuk lebih dari 130 tornado yang terjadi pada Rabu saja.

Gelombang badai itu saat ini diperkirakan akan menghantam negara bagian Carolina Utara dan Carolina Selatan sebelum beranjak ke arah timur laut.
